Educating Our Daughters

daughters

I am enjoying a wonderful time in India. There is an abundance of love. My life is filled with love and bounty. I feel so blessed. These are my roots, India is embedded in my DNA, I am a daughter of this soil.

On a sad note, gender based discrimination is very evident. Our girls here are not safe. I hear about the many rape cases of girls from a friend of mine, who is a doctor. According to her, rape is a common daily occurrence and she gets to examine the victims. At least people are finally coming forward looking for help.

I have been talked to quite a few young girls, talking about their education experiences and viewing their beautiful cursive handwriting.

There is so much talent. Such bright children and also such a struggle for the survival of the fittest in this academic world.  Lack of opportunities, a myopic mind set of the parents, and a lack of money is evident. It feels like a rat race.

India is a great nation, and our daughters are our future. Let us nurture them and invest in them. This is the nation of Laxmi, the Mother Goddess. Let us empower our daughters. And treat them with dignity and respect.
