I am excited that the fall weather is around the bend and soon it will be gardening time at the schools. Today’s generation is getting far away from nature. My job as an educator is to teach the children not only about the different biomes, planting seasons, but also the basics about soil, water, sunlight, earth worms, and getting dirty in the muA sort of a photosynthesis on teaching life skills and enjoying the whole Sensorial experience of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound.
We learn about soil, weeding, watering, mulching, and savoring the food from our garden.
Our goals are big but our objective is simple and straight forward — respect nature.
I recently was gifted a book to read called The Montessori Garden written by Sara Pape Hester. It teaches us about creating an organic garden from scratch, I am so excited. In the words of our Maria Montessori “At the present time, however, and in the circumstances of modern society, children live very far from nature”. My task is to try and bridge that gap.
