My Aging Parents

Something that has really changed my persona the past few years is watching the day to day struggles of my aging parents. It has made me humble, yet strong, knowing the fact that roles have been reversed and the responsibility for their care lies on my brother’s and my shoulders. We siblings do the best we can. One day at a time.

My brother resides in India in the city, far away from my parents hometown and I live half way around the world. Needless to stay, we have a wonderful support system thanks to all the hired help we have, to take care of them. The backbone is Ravinder, the cook and Mallika the maid. Two faithful human beings, who care for Mom and Dad.

In addition to these two, we have been able to organize daily visits from nurses, friends, doctors and a physiotherapist. All these kind and thoughtful people do an amazing job taking care of my parents like their very own.

It is heartbreaking to see an ailing Mom with severe dementia and a frail Dad. Our little assisting living facility is going strong. I am so deeply indebted to a wonderful and loving support system.

I take great solace in the fact that their twilight years are as comfortable as possible. And I thank God for the support of my loving family who urge me to do even more. That is selfless love.
