Patient Listening

listen

This is not the first time I have discussed the importance of listening as a critical communication skill, and it probably won’t be the last. We seem to listen better when the source is credible, someone we admire, or if that someone is in a position of authority.

I think we would all be well served to listen patiently — especially to those that count on us for reassurance or validation. You will be amazed how important effective listening is, as a leadership skill. People follow those who care — those who make them feel important — not those who like the sound of their own voices.

Give people time, a patient ear, and you will earn their respect. Making other people feel good about themselves is a wonderful art. Listening to what they have to say, can be the start of a masterpiece.
