Young Molly is getting trained on how to walk while on a leash, at heal, and not jump on everyone who comes into the home. The truth is that dog training is more about training the humans than it is about training the animal.
Smart dogs are a quick study — wish I could say that about all people! I have taught the concept of classical conditioning in my classes on consumer behavior. The lessons of Pavlov and his experiment with his dog are well documented. Ironically, I did not have the light bulb moment, until now, that training dogs is about conditioning their behavior.
Molly is a good student, except when it comes to her mom, Rohini. Then she is more like a naughty toddler with a mind of her own. The trainer is off to a good start, as are we all. I don’t buy some of the trainer’s contentions — “dogs don’t see in 3D, and they are color blind.” Shouldn’t we let the dog decide? And how would HE ever know?
For the mean time, let’s focus on how Molly walks… without chasing everything that moves…..
