Today I started my 31st year at The University of Tampa. The young cocky assistant professor has turned into a seasoned veteran. And the times have changed like never before.
Campus had a surreal feel to it. Very few students. Even fewer faculty in attendance. Many choosing to join the festivities via Zoom. Masks were every where — social distancing the new normal. The new world order was in play.
How long will the ride last? Will students make good choices so that we can have face to face classes? Or will we behind screens in a few weeks? Only time will tell.
As a teacher, who is passionate about his students and his craft, I find that Zoom is a poor alternative at best. You can’t teach and coach and mentor effectively over laptops and IPads. Looking people in the white of the eye goes a long way in building meaningful bonds. For now, our goal is to keep everyone safe. And each one of us has to do our part to ensure the plan works.
