With the NFL draft around the corner, pro football teams are working overtime to get the best value for their money. Lots of money being spent on elite athletes, with a single minded focus — winning.
ESPN reported that 10 years ago, coaches and team owners were spending 75 percent of their time evaluating potential athletes for true physical prowess and 25 percent on their social and emotional intelligence. Today, the tables have turned. They now spend a major chunk of their time assessing emotional and social skills, and physical talent takes a back seat.
The reason? There is too much money riding on these decisions, and win at all costs is less important than getting the right people, with the right mindset. EQ (Emotional Intelligence) wins over IQ, every day of the week, and twice on Sundays’.
The lack of effective emotional and social learning content is mind boggling. The National Foundation of High Schools offers over 5 million courses on their learning management system. Guess how many focus on EQ? ZERO. NONE. NADA.
I am working with a talented group of passionate people with building EQ skills as their life’s calling. More on that later in this blog. For now we must learn, that when it comes to people, we must invest in the right thing.
Mental muscle over brawn. Every single time.
