A Family Man, Extraordinaire — Justice F.C. Rustagi

dad

My Dad was the ultimate family man. His work, his money, and his heart were always focused on creating novel experiences for his wife and his children. In a traditional society like India, of an era gone by, he was less concerned about social acceptance and community norms, when it came to the happiness of his children.

He always encouraged us to live our lives and to push the envelope. While I am not particularly proud of my personal choices, or lifestyle growing up, he stood steadfast in his support. He gave me a big chunk of his savings so that I could pursue my dreams in the US. He gave all of us the ultimate gift of a world class education. And a value system that has allowed all of us to be good people.

He gave all his wealth away to his children, while he was alive. Wildly magnanimous. Not very smart. I am certain I was not deserving of his selfless generosity. The true measure of the man? He never, ever, expected anything in return.

So what is the final legacy of a man? For Dad, it was about raising children who would, like him, give selflessly of themselves and take care of their families. I think we have done well in that regard. My goal is to keep his legacy alive, and to make him proud of me, as we watches me from heaven with a smile in his heart.

I miss you Dad. Happy Father’s Day.

Dear Hemant, thank you for an introduction to your wonderful Dad. Wonderful because I thought Ranjana, your sis was an extraordinary person. As I read you now I know you are too, otherwise I remember you at the same table in the junior dining room. This explains the happy, strong, cerebral kids with hearts your parents raised. Wah, Pranam!
