A Lost Art

writing

I silently envy those who write exceptionally well. Unfortunately, there are many of my students who assume that writing grammatically correct English is good English. I think it is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for writing well.

Even today, the number one skill that corporations look for in new hires is communications — the ability to speak well, and write with a certain artistic flair.

And then there are those rare pieces of student writing that tug at the heart strings, that paint beautiful, poignant pictures, and leave a lasting impression. Few possess the ability to captivate the reader, to never wanting them to put the paper down, to keep them turning the pages till the final sentence. It’s magical when it does happen.

In our ‘copy and paste’ world, creative writing has been sacrificed at the alter of quick snippets and hurried prose. Reading brilliant writing is a bit like sipping fine wine – we want to savor the experience.
