I headed to my favorite upscale bar in my neighborhood and found a cozy table by the window. In comes a new, aggressive, waitress: “Hi, You ever been here before?”
I assured her, politely, that she was the new kid on the block and that she was the new girl in town, so to speak.
She was not amused by my comment. She clearly did not “fit” with the culture of this comfortable bar. Everyone else who works there is laid-back and knows the regular patrons.
That’s the problem with sales scripts – we expect that a “standard” greeting would result in a consistency in service. This excessive standardization mentality is never good in business. The problem with one-size fits all is that you end up with a size that never fits anyone.
Next time, treat everyone a little differently – it is step one towards building a meaningful relationship.
