Eight year old Adan played in the mud as his Dad washed my car at the local car wash. We chatted about school and his favorite subject — Math.
His Mom and Dad spoke little English. Adan was fluent. He wanted a nerf gun and Legos for Christmas. I slipped him 20 bucks to get his presents. His eyes got wide and his face lit up.
I asked him what he wanted to get first. “Depends what I have left over” he told me. He wanted to buy presents for his Mom and Dad first.
“Don’t you know?” He asked rhetorically — “First God, then my parents and then me”. This from an eight year old with little money. I was visibly moved by his stance. His Dad beamed with pride.
Why is that those that have so little can sometimes teach us such beautiful lessons about life?
