An Unsung Hero

I am rarely impressed by the wealth and status of the rich and famous. It does absolutely nothing for me. I learnt long ago to find satisfaction in my lot in life, and wish others well, in theirs. What is impressive and incredibly humbling to me is those that make the well-being and success of others, their life’s work.

I saw in awe the 60 Minutes story of a teacher, named Shabana, who rescued over 200 girls from Afghanistan and started a school for them in Rwanda. She is educating a generation of young girls from a country where their going to school is punishable by death. People like her marginalize my contributions as an educator. To be that selfless is inspiring.

It is common and easy to do for ourselves — it takes heart and guts to do for the have nots. Maybe each of us can take baby steps in the right direction, to make meaningful differences in the lives of the less fortunate.
