60 Minutes ran a segment on Bruno Mars this past Sunday. There is a simplistic genius to his music, yet none of his success came easy. He said something during his interview that resonated with me – “I was built for this (music)….. It’s dedicating yourself to your craft. Spending thousands of hours in a studio learning how to write a song, learning how to play different chords, training yourself to sing. You know, to get better and better”.
He thinks he can get better and better. If that happens, watch out world! I was surprised that his hit song “Uptown Funk” took over a year to write. I thought musical genius did not take time – that it flowed effortlessly; but then what do I know?
There is lesson here for all of us. We too must dedicate ourselves to “our craft”. To work harder, to get better, to never rest on our laurels, and to continue to push the envelope. We must continue to seek inspiration so that we can touch other peoples’ lives in positive ways. While most of us will never have “that” God given talent, we can certainly ensure that no one can outwork us…….
