As the world around us gets more chaotic we get desensitized to the misery around us. The number of people who die in mass shootings, the number of people killed in hurricanes, the number of people diagnosed with cancer — they become just that, a number.
As long as tragedy does not hit home, we have a passing glimpse of sadness and disbelief and then we get on with our lives. When the loss involves those we love, it hits home. And all of a sudden, the tragedy becomes real.
That’s the thing about life — we never, ever know when it will catch up with us. Tough to be empathetic when we have never walked in those difficult shoes.
