Do You Belong to a Tribe?

As a student of Anthropology, I am intimately aware of the dynamics of tribes and cultures that are closed to the outside world. Tribes are typically linked by “social, economic and religious” commonalties, among others. Today, at lunch, we talked about creating tribe like communities within the workplace, to ensure shared values and a common belief system.

I think great organizations – defined by parameters besides sales – create successful tribes, of likeminded people with diverse talents. Why would you ever want to work in a place, where you were not bound to those around you with common purpose and shared values? If you don’t belong to a tribe, cut your losses and move on – you’ll be glad you did.
