Doom Scrolling

Are you a victim of “doom scrolling”? Aimlessly scrolling for hours through social media to no end, and with no objective in mind?  I recently received this message from a former student who works from home and shared her pain:

“By the end of the day, I am so drained that the only thing I can tend to build up the energy to do is doom scroll TikTok and Instagram until the late hours of the night. It’s almost like an addiction to try and make it so my brain is never lacking stimulation. I have become super self-aware of this as it has definitely taken a toll on my mental health.”

I have a sense she is not an exception. Please don’t doom scroll as an exercise in futility. Breathe, walk, find a creative outlet, and focus on mental health as a critical lifeline. We have to find a cure for this epidemic.
