Running

Experience without reflection is a waste of time. This idea was shared by a former high-school friend. According to T.S. Eliot, “We had the experience but missed the meaning.” The notion that we don’t learn by doing, but by thinking about what we do, is valid, and insightful.

In academia there is a tremendous emphasis on experiential education. Probably not enough on why we do what we do. I have always maintained that it is important to take an occasional step back, prior to taking steps forward. Training the next generation of leaders requires us to ensure that they are thoughtful, and contemplative individuals.

Reflection and introspection is what makes us all human. From time to time, we need to get off the treadmill of life. It’s tough to catch your breath when you are running full speed ahead.
