The following post is from the blog archives from a year ago. As the summer months wind down, the Fall term is around the corner. Time to get back to work, and challenge young minds!
These Lazy Days of Summer
(originally posted July 30, 2013 http://www.5oclockreflections.com/these-lazy-days-of-summer/)
These are the crazy, hazy, lazy days of summer. And today is one of those low key days where everything moves in slow motion…
I am ready for summer to be over and certainly ready to go back to work — back to the classroom to educate young minds. I know a lot of my students will dread having me in their lives. It would certainly be more fulfilling if students were driven by learning and not grades. That, unfortunately, is not the reality of higher education.
Teaching is my passion. Catering to the needs of my students is not. I try and establish that delicate balance between content and life skills. I think as educators we do a poor job of preparing our students for the trials and tribulations of the workplace and certainly the “how to” of post college day to day living. Unfortunately, experience is a rough teacher and learning life’s lessons the hard way is never fun.
I think we should all learn to take ourselves out of our intellectual comfort zone. Try something new, and if it ain’t broke, break it.
