My dear friend, Amy, provided a brilliant insight — when we keep things at the back of our minds, we choose not to deal with them. When we keep them front and center, we live in the moment, and practice true empathy. The former leads to small talk. The latter to compassion.
Things at the back of our mind are, at best, a minor inconvenience. Things that are front and center, tend to consume us. Either practice true empathy, or say nothing. That way it’s better, for everyone involved.
