According to research presented at a TED Talk by Angela Lee Duckworth, the one key predictor of long term success is grit — passion and perseverance over the long haul. Dr. Duckworth conducted her research with students in the inner city, some of America’s finest at West Point, sales people in corporate America, and spelling bee contestants. Grit was the common denominator as a predictor of success with all groups, in all environments.
The truth of the matter is that grit is a greater predictor of success than IQ. The message is simple; people can out-smart you, just ensure they don’t out-work you.
The million dollar question still remains — how do we build grit in people? Till they figure that out, hunker down and get to work!
