I made a critical business decision today to make a significant investment in an individual who has shown exemplary commitment to the organization. It was a feel good decision.
Was it the right decision? Only time will tell.
There are those who are intellectually bright, but will move on as soon as the promise of something better shows up on the horizon. These are transitional employees that are primarily committed to themselves — not to you or the organization. Loyalty is a two way street and those who are biding their time are not worth your investment.
Invest in those who buy into your vision, carry the same passion as you, and have an intangible quality that exemplifies a sense of ownership. Over the years, I have learned that talk is cheap, and that professing commitment is bad sales talk. Demonstrating loyalty and a great work ethic is the ultimate litmus test of those that belong, and are worthy of your resources. Investing in the wrong people is like throwing money down the drain.
Time to separate the men from the boys, and the ladies from the girls.
