Why is it that people in positions of leadership are selective in sharing information? Is it because they lack confidence in themselves, or there is a “power play” with people within the organization? Keeping information selective and close to the chest creates duplication of effort, unclear roles, and confused team members. This is not poker — this is business.
I think information should flow freely, be shared often, and be easily accessible. Leaders should create a culture of transparency and invite a healthy criticism of their own ideas. Open organizations are more innovative, less bureaucratic, and better able to nurture the talent that drives the business.
Coddling information is about control, and control is about power. These are concepts of the past – the new era of business has begun.
