I have been blessed to travel the globe and see historical landmarks and exotic cities, while experiencing the many cultures that make up our beautiful world. However, there are few places that have left an indelible mark on my psyche and my heart. Above all, there are even fewer places that have forever changed me as a person.
Welcome to Machu Picchu; a place like no other. While we have all seen the imagery and most of us have read about the lost Inca civilization, there are no words to describe the breathtaking scenery, and the iconic remains of a bygone era. The pictures do it no justice at all — they do not even begin to tell the story. Initially established in the early 15th century, the lost city lay hidden for over 400 years before being rediscovered in 1911.
Surrounded by high mountains and deep ravines with a flowing river, I can see why this place was lost for so many centuries. I sat atop the hill, overlooking the city below, taking in the scenery of a magical place. The true impact on my senses occurred as I walked the ruins of immaculately laid out stones perfectly nestled to create homes and a community.
My mind wandered to the life of those people, their circumstances, their world. I felt a rush of emotions as I tried to make sense of my surroundings. Life was probably not easy for these hearty people, but I found beauty in their seclusion, and the simplicity of their lives.
It is ironic that I found my favorite place on this earth among the ruins of an ancient civilization. Machu Picchu has a special place in my heart, and this experience will stay with me forever.
I will be back soon — that’s a promise.
