A recent World Bank report indicates that there are 3 billion people in this world who live on less than $2 a day. The fact that just over 40 percent of the world population lives in abject poverty is disturbing. Keep that in mind when life seems unfair and unbearable.
For us, the implications are twofold:
- Learning to appreciate our “lot in life,” and teaching our children to do the same.
- Making a positive difference in the life of at least one person less fortunate than us.
The goal is to take baby steps in the right direction. Teach a child to read, donate to local causes you believe in, create social capital in your communities and make social responsibility a key part of your organizational culture. At the Montessori schools, we teach our children to give, and we choose to lead by example – involving our entire company in common causes that deserve our attention.
The worst thing we can do is to turn away and do nothing.
