My Broken Dog

“She is a broken dog,” was Rohini’s reflective observation, as Molly nestled at her feet. Molly is a flat coated retriever, who battles her demons in unfamiliar ways. She chases her imaginary ghosts, keeps a tennis ball within reach, and is skiddish at the slightest sound.

We rescued Molly from a neglected environment almost 3 years ago. She spent the first ten months of her life with zero human contact. That might explain some of her behavior.

Molly is scared of EVERYTHING — dogs (except our motley crew of Bischon’s), children, cats, cars, people, dump trucks, the vet, etc. Inspite of her psychosis, she has developed the sweetest disposition. If she could have her way, there would be no other dogs in the house. She is MY dog, constantly seeking my attention, and rarely straying more than a few feet from me when I am home.

Why do people get dogs when they can’t care for them? When animals are abused or neglected, they become psychotic, and scared. That’s my Molly girl.

Molly Mayhem may be a broken dog, but I wouldn’t change a thing about her. Now only if she knew how to behave around people…..
