No Closure

A colleague lost his father, hours before he made it to the hospital, on the other side of the world. The news reminded me about getting word of my Dad’s passing while I was at Frankfurt Airport. The wounds get raw again. Memories flood the psyche and emotions rip your heart out.

For those of us who have made America home, but belong to lands far and wide, the tradeoffs are intense. The inability to say “goodbye,” to my parents, and seek their final blessings, haunt me till this day. There is no closure. There are no easy answers.

The hurt never goes away and time does not heal. We seek solace in the love of our families. We learn to cope — but only till we get the news of someone’s personal loss.

And the rites of passage continue…
