Our Travel Culture

As I sat at the bar at an Atlanta Airport hotel, sipping on my Martini, I could not help but hear the conversation around me.

Meet the professional business people, who travel for a living — hungry for success, of all ages, predominantly men, and habitual bar hounds. I sensed they have spent many evenings at hotel bars toasting each other, and solving the problems of the world.

I heard tidbits of conversations around job security, the number of frequent flyer miles they had racked up, and about who got ‘sacked’ earlier today.

This jungle of commotion is not for me; but this sales engine driven by professional business travelers is what makes America tick.

I can’t imagine my life in a whirlwind of airplanes, bars and hotel rooms – 5 days a week. I am just glad — and blessed — that my contribution to society is not determined by the number of frequent flyer miles in my back pocket.
