The message for my wife, Rohini, was clear: turn in your tuition and fees, file your paperwork, show your marriage license (really?), and someone will contact you. The guidance counselors were clueless, and the left hand had no idea what the right hand was doing. Welcome to higher education in the for-profit world.
The course work is suspect, the instructors are unavailable, the feedback is non existent and the proverbial “A” is assured. And you get college credit to boot. The top for-profit schools in the country rake in close to a billion dollars, provide marginal customer service support and work closely with local and state government to ensure that only their courses are acceptable/ required across a variety of industries and regulatory agencies.
As an educator, I find it insulting that the focus is on transcripts and proof of completion rather than learning and outcomes assessment. The motivation is dollars and the audience is captive. Next time you hire someone from one of these schools, look beyond the piece of paper to assess what they really know.
