President Dilma Rousseff

protests

You know a country is in trouble when the President is the laughing stock of the nation.
“She can’t talk in complete sentences.” “She is an idiot.” “The President does not understand economics, or anything else for that matter.” Direct quotes from our various speakers.

Their emotions ran the gamut — amusement, frustration, bewilderment.

No laughing matter here. Over 150,000 people protested in the major cities in Brazil earlier this week, seeking an impeachment of President Rousseff, and calling for a military coup. This political hostility stems from charges of corruption at Petrobras — Brazil’s largest oil producer. Over $1 billion misappropriated, and the finger pointing has never stopped.

How can power be so intoxicating that people insist on serving in positions of authority when no one wants them? Leadership is not a birthright earned at the polls, it is earned through trust, and sacrifice. However, we are talking about politicians here, and they are certainly a breed apart. There is heaven for the good, hell for the bad.

And right below hell, there is a place for politicians.
