Raksha – Protection
Bandhan — Bond
This Hindu festival celebrates the bond between a brother and a sister with a commitment to love, protect and serve. I have this protective bond with my sister, Ranjana.
As most of my readers are aware, Ranjana is fighting Ovarian Cancer with steely resolve and intestinal fortitude not for the weak of heart or spirit.
Our relationship and my role in her life has evolved. As her primary caregiver, I am less like a younger brother and more like a father figure. Rohini, of course, takes care of both of us.
As my sister fights the good fight, we lean on each other during moments of uncertainty, and walk side by side as she battles, and I offer love and support.
This festival of Raksha Bandhan for us two, is a more than a day to celebrate. It is a way of life as we battle a common enemy. I know Mom and Dad would be proud — they raised us well.
