Relationships. Once you’re in one, how do you keep it?

Relationships are beautiful. They give meaning to our lives and invigorate us. They are also hard. I’ve learned in my 23 years of life that some of the most meaningful and valued relationships are often the hardest to sustain. Why? Because some people in our life are worth fighting for. When you love someone you will do anything in your power to work things out, despite the pitfalls and roadblocks life throws at you. It would be easy for us to give up, walk out the door and shut it forever. That is definitely the EASY route. But often times we don’t want to live in a world without that other person. Is it because we fear to be alone or is it because that person brings meaning to our life?

Relationships with friends, families, and significant others exist to teach us about ourselves. The depths of our existence and our ability to love and be loved are revealed to us through these connections. The next time the road gets a bit bumpy in your relationship, ask yourself, is this person worth fighting for? If so, why? Asking these questions will help determine if you continue to fight the good fight or if it’s time to shut the door permanently.
