Retail Mayhem

Hold on to your children, and to your purses. The retail diehards are out in full force to indulge in a free for all 50 percent off New Years Day sale at Dillard’s. If you are wondering what I was doing there, I was wondering the same thing. The sacrifices we make for the women we love.

The store was crammed with women (for the most part), shopping in groups, hoarding purses and perfumes, shoes and clothes as if Armageddon was on the horizon. The pushing and shoving and jostling were part of their retail delight. I can’t figure out why any one person would need to buy an armful of purses — or an armful of anything for that matter — but the look of glee in their eyes told their own story of a mission accomplished.

I for one, shook my head in disbelief. More people, buying more stuff that they didn’t need and could ill afford. As a marketing professional, I still get baffled by consumers and retailers. As I made a hasty retreat after ten minutes from this mayhem, I thanked the holy spirits that retail is not my thing. Time to go back to school and learn more about the motivation behind shopping behavior.
