I have built my life on second chances — at work, at home, and my life in general.
As a result, I am a better professional, a better father, a better husband, and certainly a better human being.
We develop expectations of those we love and trust, and those we invest in, both financially and emotionally. Unfortunately we live in an imperfect world, as we are primarily dealing with people. We have a tendency to let people down — and most of the time when we do, we let down those who believe in us the most. (Guilty as charged)
As managers and employees we should learn to under-promise and over-deliver. Most of us have this backwards. We interview well, play to the organizational power brokers and take the path of least resistance. Maintaining the status quo is overrated and the cream really does rise to the top. The key is to try and strike the right balance between hard work, intelligence, compassion, and common sense, in that order. And yes — PASSION.
Most of the time that’s all some people needs — someone to believe in them. When you take a chance on people, they are less likely to let you down, especially the second time around. Smart people learn from their mistakes, and build their lives on second chances. When was the last time you gave someone a second chance?
