A small Medieval town in the heart of Tuscany, Siena has an old world charm. Narrow cobble stone streets meander through quaint neighborhoods, leading to the geographic heart of the city — the IL CAMPO. This ancient amphitheater, shaped like a sea shell, has raised edges with everything funneling to the base with a steep grade. The focal point of the funnel is the ancient tower that stands watch over the city. This 13th century amphitheater is completely cocooned by tall red brick buildings that have stood unchanged.
I can imagine gladiators fighting for supremacy, with the crowds cheering wildly, in ancient times. Right now, Siena is preparing for the famous horse race, the Palio, where 12 horses representing different regions race for bragging rights and geographic supremacy. The Palio is going to be featured in an upcoming James Bond movie, giving this little piece of heaven even greater exposure.
For now, the pace of life in this little town suits me just fine. Nobody, and nothing seems to be in a rush. So different than my life at home. Maybe I will enjoy this peace and quiet a tad bit longer and I must remind myself to slow down and breathe, when the pace at home picks up speed.
