Stars Can be Overrated

superstar

“Everybody is a star in the league,” lamented NBA great Larry Bird. “It’s the superstars that win Championships.”

This perspective also holds true in business. Competence and meeting expected levels of performance, while acceptable, is not worthy of celebration or distinctive reward.

I look for superstars in my company too. I have a few — very few — who perform at superior levels. It takes a combination of consistent efficiency and effectiveness. And compassion. These are the people I choose to reward. These are the people whose sins are easily forgiven. These are the people who leverage resources and relationships. These are the few who drive our success.

The challenge? They are few and far between. When you find them, hire them, reward them, cherish them and hold on to them. They are difficult to find, and even more difficult to keep.
