The new buzz word in business is ‘sustainability.’ Remember TQM from a decade ago?
Everyone talks about it, very few actually understand its implications. I like the Swiss approach to sustainable development. Their goal? Leave a better world for their children and the generation yet to come.
The Swiss approach is very holistic — a critical balance between ecological, economic and social sustainability. Suppliers are required to meet international standards within their industries, and are paid premiums for adopting sustainable practices in their home countries. Manufacturing is lean and energy efficient. Disposal of industrial and retail waste is a major priority and investing in social programs such as education and the arts is central to their belief system.
The critics insist that the Swiss model, in its totality, will not work in other countries.
While there may be an element of truth to that perspective, our approach to sustainability is myopic and narrow.
We prefer to line our pocket with profits, cut corners to increase margins and our social giving is worthwhile as long as it generates positive public relations.
We have so much to learn, and so far to go to leave a better world for our children.
Time to start taking baby steps in the right direction.
