Simon Sinek recently wrote that “a team is not a group of people that work together, but a group of people who trust each other”.
Profound. Insightful. Brilliant.
The question is: how do we build trust to build an effective team?
Nan Russell recommends 5 essential steps to building trust:
1. Operate with respect.
2. Eliminate the blame game.
3. Cultivate self-awareness – (how do you affect people)?
4. Have honorable intentions.
5. Get beyond yourself.
Trust starts with those in charge leading by example. By having the backs of the people who work for them, and not playing favorites. By ensuring that once they articulate a common vision, they hire the right people, invest in their success and reward them fairly. This is not a rocket science, but certainly an art.
Simple directive, difficult to accomplish.
