The North American Leadership Academy (NALA) shed light on the difference between these two distinct skill sets. While technical skills are crucial to performing the task, developing ones transformational skills are critical to leading people with purpose. Think about the two people who really inspire you. One commonality? They treat people with dignity and respect. And lead by example.
Developing your leadership skills is about solving people problems, inspiring change and developing a certain charisma. Successful leaders don’t shout from the rooftops “follow me, follow me, I am your leader.” Inspirational leaders challenge the status quo, listen generously, and genuinely care about those that make them successful.
It is my sense that transformational leadership is about building ones emotional intelligence, or EQ. The lesson from this week? These skills can be taught by breaking down mental barriers, vast doses of introspection and insight into ones own psyche and behavior. The program was intense. Insightful. Tiring. Rewarding. Time to put the lessons to work.
