I recently saw math test questions for a fourth grader that had many of us, with advanced degrees, scratching our heads in disbelief. The questions were phrased more like riddles, clearly designed to confuse young minds. Not to assess learning.
As an educator, I take pride on teaching to a body of knowledge, and testing to that exact body of knowledge. However, over the past few years, I have moved away from tests and exams because they measure little. Yes, they do measure one dimension of intellect — what is debatable is whether they measure the relevant dimension that impacts long term success and potential.
Perfect grades, based on excellent test taking skills, are overrated. I value street smarts, personality, strong communication skills and the ability to think outside the box.
We should leave rote memorization to the parrots.
