The All Saints Chapel at Kunta Hora, CZ

Kunta Hora — a UNESCO World Heritage City — is the second most important city in the Czech Republic. Its masterpiece? The All Saints Chapel. Rumor has it that the abbot of the Sedlec monastery sprinkled soil from the holy land and the area around the church became a favorite burial site for the aristocracy.

About 400 years ago, the bones of over 40,000 people were exhumed to make room for the ‘new dead’ and the bones were stored inside the chapel. Over time, the bones were reassembled in an artistic tribute, inside the Chapel, creating a masterpiece of bones and skulls from 40,000 skeletons. Storage tombs with bones, skeleton chandeliers, and a coat-of-arms all made with bones.

I have tremendous respect for those who have passed and have occasionally spent quiet moments in old graveyards, often wondering about the lives and untold stories of those who rest peacefully.

I have traveled extensively around the world and this Chapel is by far the “freakiest” thing that I have EVER seen. This chapel is bizarre, and defies imagination. I’ve never seen anything like it, and I will probably never will. Did  I say it was freaky??
