The Economics of Stupidity

There is an economic cost to stupid rhetoric. Stock prices can fall, people can lose their jobs, and the public relations nightmare can be difficult to contain. A university professor got fired yesterday for blaming the Houston floods (and suffering) caused by Hurricane Harvey on peoples’ political beliefs.

CEOs have been fired by their board for making insensitive and cruel comments, on more than one occasion. Public relation gaffes are difficult to hide in our social media driven world. Once the arrow has left the bow, no amount of apologies can save the day.

The lesson? Be careful what you ‘tweet’ or put on Facebook — not just big brother, ALL of us are watching……
