The Have’s and the Have Nots

have-have-not

The economic dichotomy between the blessed and the poor in India is stark, gut wrenching, and leaves one with a sense of hopelessness. Visual signs are everywhere: local neighborhoods, the drive to Delhi, and on every street corner in the city. The affluent move with purpose through fancy malls, while the poor struggle on the streets in unhygienic, and dilapidated conditions.

The wealthy thrive on consumerism and all the material comforts so typical of our western world, while the poor work day-to-day to survive, feed their families, and keep their head above water. The abject poverty in India is disturbing, and what makes it painful is that there is no hope for the masses.

Corruption is rampant, the poor are exploited and the wealth chasm continues to widen. Bridging the gap will take a monumental effort, a lot of heart and an unimaginable generosity of spirit and lots of open wallets.

I plan to continue to do my part not just today, but for the rest of my life.
