I confess that I am a sports junkie and rarely find a sport I don’t enjoy or can’t watch. The good news, is that the older I get, the losses stay in perspective. It is a game after all.
I was watching the ESPY awards — that celebrates athletic accomplishments — and was particularly moved by Stuart Scott, the winner of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. An award winning sports broadcaster, Stuart has been battling cancer and has taken the fight to the disease.
He spoke poignantly about almost losing his fight, about those who have stepped forward to help him, and his love for his family, particularly his children. I was moved as he invited his young daughter to come to the stage, because he needed a hug. It takes fortitude and strength of character to show weakness and vulnerability in front of a national audience.
The older we get, we don’t fight as hard, give up too easily and become experts on everything under the sun. There are those like Scott that are fighting for their lives.
We have much to learn from them, about not sweating the small stuff, about not giving up, about believing, about fighting to the end. And that a game is just a game.
