Obamacare is here Ladies and Gentleman, and it brings with it a major challenge for small businesses. While the right to affordable healthcare is understandable, the mandate to have small businesses with 50 employees pick up the tab for their people is questionable because it is cost prohibitive.
There is something wrong when it is cheaper for me to shut down one of our schools than it is to provide health care for all employees. The key issue in play is that this decision is not about saving money – it is about survival.
The magic number is now 49. That’s the maximum number of people who can work for the schools. The directive has been shared with the executive team. It baffles the mind that the key strategic variable that will drive my business operations and growth is the number of people I can keep on staff. It defies everything I learned in Graduate School. Talk about the tail wagging the dog! I wonder how many companies will shutter their doors because Obamacare came calling? Only time will tell.
Time to teach my dogs new tricks. Maybe Congress can help?
