Social Media and National TV has been abuzz lately about Michael Sam, the first openly gay American Football college athlete, who is on the verge of a big payday as he gears to play professionally in the National Football League.
Unfortunately, the story has been less about his work ethic and ability on the field and more about his sexual orientation. The pundits wonder if his personal choices will affect his draft status. I hope not.
An individual’s sexual orientation — or religious beliefs, for that matter — should have nothing to do with whether they get hired to do a job. The deep rooted personal biases of the past have given way to a new normal where same sex marriages are legal in most states in this country, and rightfully so. The value judgments have got to stop, and it’s time to celebrate the rights of individuals. For those in denial — time to stop peeking into other people’s homes, and focus on getting your own house in order.
