Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
(The Road Not Taken, 16-20)
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
The road less traveled is beautiful and the scenery is exquisite. Yet, it takes us out of our comfort zone, so we tend to stick with the familiar.
We bask in what we do well; in the ordinary, in rote work. The road less traveled is full of surprises, and lurking circumstances that challenge us to our core. That’s also where we can find glory and distinctive excellence.
We should explore new roads and new ways of looking at our professional craft. As I often tell my students, “if it ain’t broke, break it”. How else will we ever grow? And yes, the new roads make all the difference.
