The Sushi Man

giving

Affection, appreciation, and gratitude are a two way street. And on a day like today, a splendid reminder of the generosity of the human spirit.

From time to time, the Montessori schools offers a free education to deserving children in the community. In a small way, we use this as an avenue to give back to those who may not have the same opportunities. Education should not be the exclusive domain of the affluent.

One sweet recipient of Rohini’s generosity is a little boy whose Dad makes Sushi at the local grocery store. I ran into Dad when I walked in to grab some Sushi today. He dropped everything he was doing, came out from behind the counter to greet me like a long lost friend, gave me a big hug, and insisted that he would make me some “special rolls”. Icing on the cake? No charge for lunch!

His affection was heart warming, his smile infectious. His deep sense of gratitude apparent in his every movement and the painstaking attention to the “special rolls” that he crafted with dexterity. I was touched.

It takes little tokens of kindness to spread good cheer and to pay it forward. Lunch was satiating, but I left fulfilled in more ways than one.
