The UGLY ‘C’ Word…..

relayforlife

“Cancer touches everyone’s life,” was the adage I never understood, until I lost my best friend, Alan Weimer, to the dreadful disease almost 6 years ago. I’m not sure how one feels when they are told that their days are numbered. I think of Alan often and miss my friend, who was like a brother to me. I saw him really suffer through the last 6 months of his life — his body ravaged into a mere image of his former self. Such a brutal killer. Such a senseless loss of a good man.

This week is devoted to the community fight for this cause — Relay for Life, a 24 hour relay walk to raise money for cancer research and a celebration of life and survival.

Our Montessori family — parents, teachers and students — have raised close to $5000, and will collectively walk the 24 hour marathon so that those stricken by cancer can fight the good fight.

This annual event always creates perspective for me. I tend to complain less, and count my blessings. Time to give back to our communities and to those whose lives hang in the balance. Walk to celebrate life. Walk for the cause. I walk for Alan. I miss you my friend…
