They Make Us Vulnerable

Molly, my flat coated retriever, came to me panting hard and by the way she looked at me, I knew something was wrong. I rushed her to the Vet, where she was diagnosed with pancreatitis.

I watched her lay listless and helpless. Fluids, lots of meds, two days at the Vet, and my nervous call with her — “I can’t lose her Doc, she is only four”. I choked back the tears realizing how much this dog meant to me, and how much I loved her.  She is better now, but this constant challenge with our beloved dogs continue.

They are voiceless, helpless, members of our family. They make us vulnerable, because we owe it to them to protect them. My dogs have taught me a lot about love and loyalty, and about unabashed excitement and sheer joy with the little things.

We must love these fur babies with the same ardent fervor with which they love us. I just can’t imagine my life without them. Maybe, I got the better end of the deal in this relationship.
