Ever get lost in your own head, sorting through the myriad of thoughts and emotions that define your very being? The older I get, the more time I spend lost in my thoughts — not because I am self absorbed, but because I need to find solace from the noise of every day life.
I think writing this blog has certainly made me more thoughtful, more reflective, more philosophical. This mindset is certainly contradictory to my extrovert personality, yet it gives me the quiet I so desperately seek. Meditation, which is now becoming a way of life, has certainly helped. Amazing what closing one’s eyes and breathing, does for the soul.
I encourage my graduate students to spend 30 minutes a week in quiet reflection, so that they can get off the treadmill of life, find clarity of purpose, and direction. You should try it sometime. Initially it feels uncomfortable, but as it becomes a habit, the experience can change your life.
